Nellie Rice, a wonderful teacher for 50 years

My generation had teachers like Ruth Weir and Olive Theissen. My mother’s generation had teachers like Nellie Rice, Olive Wright Noteman, and Janey Coulter.

Nellie’s first school was District School No 8, Black Hole Hollow.

She also taught at Pumpkin Hook, Ashgrove, Rising Sun, Jackson No 4, and Checkered House before moving to District School No 2 (Coila) for 14 years where one of her pupils was little Ruthie Weir.

She joined the jr high faculty of Cambridge Union School in 1918.

A familiar site was Nellie in her buggy pulled by her horse Merrylegs as she headed to our teaching jobs.

Nellie retired in 1938 after teaching for FIFTY years.

Her retirement party was a village-wide affair with over 300 people stopping to say “thanks” to a beloved teacher.

Nellie died in 1952 at the age of 82.

Photo is labeled CHS faculty since it was still Cambridge High School until the district was centralized (CCS) in 1944
